The car, known internally as the W25 and later dubbed the "Silver Arrow", won its very first race, staged at the Nürburgring.
However, there was doubt for a while as to whether that first appearance would take place at all. When the new race car from Stuttgart was weighed prior to the race, it was found to be two kilograms too heavy. As there were no other options available, the decision was taken to remove the white paintwork.
During its lifespan (1934-1936) the car was constantly modified and fitted with increasingly powerful engines. All of the engines had eight cylinders – the increases in performance were achieved primarily by enlarging the displacement.
