In 1972 Mercedes-Benz’s luxury model series, which had been setting standards within the industry for decades, was given its own name.
The new S‑Class – like the 350 SL sports car, presented in 1971 – shaped the appearance of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and revealed the brand’s innovative safety concept: the large horizontal headlamps were as eye-catching as the distinctive indicators, clearly visible from the front and sides. The striking, ribbed tail lights were not only style-defining, but also highly dirt-repellent – enhancing safety. On the subject of safety, the S‑Class set a further milestone in 1978: as the world’s first series-produced vehicle available with the anti-lock braking system, which ensured that the driver retained full steering control, even during emergency braking. A worldwide sensation in its day, thanks to the pioneering work of Mercedes-Benz, ABS is today an industry standard.
