The 500 K and 540 K models created in Stuttgart and Sindelfingen went on to become automotive legends – cars which, decades on, are still capable by their sheer existence of inspiring enthusiasm for Mercedes-Benz and underlining the technological and design expertise of a brand steeped in tradition. It is no coincidence that both models are today among the most sought-after classics, or that so many visitors to the Mercedes-Benz Museum declare the red 500 K Special Roadster their favourite exhibit.

In June 1934 seven variants of the 500 model with Kompressor engine were added to the price list. The 500 K featured a Mercedes-Benz overdrive transmission with semi-automatic gearshifts. The chassis of the 500 K and 540 K had a 3290 mm wheelbase and, like the 380 model, was available in two versions.
