Alongside the 280 S, 280 SE and 280 SL, a new generation of mid-range cars was launched in January 1968. The original model range, known within the company as W114/115, comprised six models – from the 200 D with 55 hp four-cylinder diesel engine to the 250 with 130 hp six-cylinder carburettor engine. The top-of-the-range model, the 250, differed in appearance from its more prosaic counterparts, being the only model to feature a double front bumper. The four-cylinder 200 D to 220 models were classified as model series W115, while the two six-cylinder 230 and 250 models were assigned the designation W114. Colloquially the new-generation models have been known since their introduction in 1968 as the "Stroke Eight" models.
